Oil Spill Detection in the Natural Environment
It is well known that pollution from hydrocarbon spills can be very damaging to critical assets, both environmental and industrial. Volatile Light Fuel Oils are both highly toxic and present a significant fire or explosion risk, whilst Heavy Fuel Oils are very persistent, corrosive and notoriously difficult to clean up.
In order to monitor these potential hazards Ocean Scientific International Ltd (OSIL) provide an array of fluorescence-based hydrocarbon detection systems that allow for the near real-time detection and reporting of spill situations, enabling a more immediate response and thereby reducing the impact of any spill situation.
These remote systems utilise a suitable off grid power and communication systems coupled with a variety of novel in water and above water sensors that are capable of detecting both light and heavy oils. The sensors are easily incorporated into floating buoy platforms or fixed support structures, and can be effortlessly networked together to cover wider areas. The buoy systems can also be equipped with additional sensors such as water current monitoring & meteorological conditions to assist with predicting the movement of spills, aiding clean-up operations.
In the event of a spill situation the systems provide an early alert to the presence of hydrocarbons on water, and alarms from the installed sensors are sent directly to internet-enabled devices. The alarms ensure that the earliest possible preventative measures, such as the deployment of oil containment booms or the shut-down / activation of pumps, can be implemented in a timely manner, preventing negative impacts on the environment and sensitive assets.
OSIL have a supplied & installed over 100 systems worldwide, which are currently protecting a variety of sensitive infrastructure and ecological assets including the intakes for sea water abstraction facilities, nuclear power plant cooling systems and industrial manufacturing facilities. OSIL engineers can provide customers with a complete installation service, including full training in the operation and maintenance of the equipment, and on-going system support.
