The AWAC is perhaps the most well respected, sophisticated and frequently used acoustic Doppler profiler and directional wave gauge. Using Acoustic Surface Tracking (AST), the AWAC will make high quality wave measurements deployed up to 50 m below the surface. Further, the SUV measurement method will allow the AWAC to be deployed on a subsurface buoy if the total water depth is deeper than 50 m.

With the Nortek AWAC, you get a current profiler and a wave directional system in one unit. You can measure the current speed and direction in 1-meter thick layers from the bottom to the surface. Waves of all varieties are measureable; this includes long waves, storm waves, short wind waves, or transient waves generated by local ship traffic.

The AWAC is designed as a coastal monitoring system. It is small, rugged, and suitable for multi-year operation in tough environments. The mechanical design is all plastic and titanium to avoid corrosion. The AWAC is available in two transmit frequencies (1 MHz / 600 kHz) which allow for different deployment depths.

The sensor is usually mounted in a frame at the bottom, where it is protected from complications at the surface such as harsh weather, vandalism, and ship traffic. While safely located at the bottom it is operated in online or in stand-alone mode.

In stand-alone mode, the raw data are stored to the internal data logger and power comes from an external battery pack. A variety of options are available with maximum deployment lengths of 4 months with hourly wave data or 8 months when using lithium batteries.

Online systems have a variety of possible communication configurations. The most common are long, offshore cables (max. 5 km) or acoustic modems. Online systems can be delivered with backup batteries, protected cables, shore side interface units, and online software.

Remote Optical Watcher – Aluminium

The detection of petroleum products, including crude oil, diesel/fuel oil, motor oil, lube oil, gasoline, food oils etc. near the water surface is widely required in industrial and environmental applications. A timely alert enables countermeasures, not only limiting damage to the environment, but also reducing costs for remediation and clean-up. The system pays for itself with the first spill prevented.

The Remote Optical Watcher sensor is installed looking downwards, up to 10m meters above the water level. The sensor technology is based on fluorescence excitation and detection. Due to very low power consumption it is possible to use directly connected to AC or via a solar panel / battery set-up, the unit can be continuously unattended and requires almost no maintenance. The system automatically filters out ambient conditions (e.g. sunlight), providing highly reliable detection under all light, weather and water surface conditions.

In case of a spill, the Remote Optical Watcher provides an instant warning, enabling users to activate countermeasures, e.g. shutting off pumps or valves and notify personnel via a variety of interfaces and wireless options. The Remote Optical Watcher is designed and manufactured for deployment in rugged settings. The non-contact installation above water eases installation and operation and eliminates problems such as bio-fouling. Remote Optical Watcher sensors can be used as stand-alone monitors or within a network of strategically mounted sensors interconnected by the Remote Optical Watcher software.

OSIL’s Micro Field Buoy is a cheap, quick and easy way to ensure constant and immediate data collection when other systems are out of action, or where an environmental situation requires monitoring.

The 30cm diameter buoy is designed to alert users to unexpected rises in water quality parameters. Its compact size and weight make it ideal for one person to handle in the field, and its single point mooring makes for easy deployment and recovery.

Manufactured using a hard anodised marine grade aluminium hull, the Micro Field Buoy is built with a central deployment frame designed to safely accommodate a turbidity sensor, multiparameter sonde or similar instrument, while providing protection from collision damage.

Designed for deployments of up to 1 month, the Micro Field Buoy carries sufficient batteries to power instrumentation, telemetry (GSM/GPRS/3G) and a CR1000 data logger. Weighing just 15 kg and having a total length of 1.5m, this buoy is easy for one person to handle and deploy.
